Heating with infrared lamps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As it is well known, heat propagation<\/strong> occurs in three different and diverse ways: by conduction<\/strong>, convection<\/strong> and radiation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While with conduction <\/strong>physical contact between the two bodies exchanging heat is necessary, with convection<\/strong> there must be a moving fluid carrying the heat. On the other hand, radiation<\/strong> is the only heat-transmitting<\/strong> mean only based on electromagnetic waves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our daily lives, we deal with many electromagnetic waves<\/strong> that perform different functions. Visible light<\/strong>, radio waves <\/strong>and the microwaves <\/strong>with which we cook food are all examples of electromagnetic waves<\/strong> that differ in frequency <\/strong>and wavelength<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The frequency <\/strong>of a wave consists in the number of oscillations it makes in one second and is measured in hertz [Hz]<\/strong>; on the other hand, the wavelength<\/strong> is the linear distance between two consecutive points at which the wave assumes the same value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a close link between wavelength <\/strong>and frequency <\/strong>and therefore, depending on the different fields of application, one or the other is usually referred to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infrared lamp types based on wavelength<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As already indicated, the infrared<\/strong> wavelength <\/strong>must have values between 700 nm <\/strong>and 1 mm<\/strong>. However, within this range there are emitters with different wavelengths.

This means that we can have IR-A short-wave emitters <\/strong>with wavelengths between 700 nm<\/strong> and 1400 nm<\/strong>, IR-B medium-wave emitters <\/strong>with values between 1400 nm<\/strong> and 3000 nm<\/strong>, and finally long-wave emitters <\/strong>with wavelengths between 3000 nm <\/strong>and 1 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of these three types of infrared radiations<\/strong>, the most widely used for heating is certainly the short wave<\/strong>. In Heating lamps<\/strong> using this section of the infrared spectrum the bulb<\/strong> must reach very high temperatures<\/strong> of more than 1000 \u00b0C<\/strong> and their heating effect is almost immediate once switched on, with a penetration<\/strong> rate of around 97%.

The cost<\/strong> of these types of infrared lamps<\/strong> is also very competitive. However, one must remember that the heating effect disappears shortly after the lamp is switched off and that smooth surfaces with light colours can reflect these waves and prevent heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fast medium-wave lamps<\/strong> with IR-B emitters <\/strong>are used very little due to their poor penetration capacity and high cost, while long-wave infrared heaters<\/strong>, characterised by ceramic<\/strong> plates, are only used when the surfaces of objects in already partially heated rooms need to be<\/strong> heated (to be further investigated)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
